Making the Most of Experience

Burt Temples founded Quality/Information Services and Systems (QISS) in 2005 to help clients use applications and their information systems to manage all areas of their organizations.

As Information/Quality Systems Director for The EPI Companies in Marietta Georgia, Burt successfully led the effort to re-implement the entire Hagen OA information system and bringing all modules on-line. This included taking a plant from an E-Pace and Vantage system into the database. This effort involved working with all departments in re-designing the data schema for essential information, creating efficient written work procedures, developing and leading training sessions to standardize, stabilize and sustain data entry. The re-configuration was designed to support the new philosophy of a Lean company. The redesigned system resulted in better organized information, accurately entered by fewer people and effectively used at all levels.

In addition, Burt implemented EFI’s PrintFlow scheduling module, Radio Frequency inventory control and SmartLinc’s Shipment management for both Hagen OA and ProMail systems. His unique understanding of the system, quality training, printing operations and report writing abilities allowed his clients to improve their capabilities in job management, production scheduling,  manufacturing management, inventory control and shop floor reporting.

In 2003, Burt was selected to be a team member installing Hagen OA nationally for Cenveo. The team successfully implemented 22 sites in two years. In the role of a system designer, Burt set up work and costs centers, employee profiles, and scheduling systems. He created a multitude of reports retrieving information from the Hagen system for management. As a trainer, he ran software training classes in electronic scheduling, production management for supervisors, general manager and sales management and shop floor data entry. Further, Burt served as team document controller and training material designer. He wrote and maintained 683 procedures on operating the software and combined them into 25 training manuals.

Cenveo selected Burt as one of its original corporate Continuous Improvement Program (CIP) instructors for the Cenveo University training program. CIP was an internal Six Sigma style quality training program that focused on the philosophy and tools used by these types of quality programs. As an instructor, he led several one week sessions that taught Statistical Process Control (SPC) and teaming concepts. Finally, Burt was a presenter at the GATF Continuous Improvement Network convention on using SPC for proofing improvements, monitoring and solution of production problems

As the Quality Assurance Manager at Color Graphics in Atlanta, Burt established and organized a quality assurance program based on the ISO 9002 and Lean Manufacturing systems. The program was responsible for reducing errors and improving productivity by 27% and passed several customers’ certification audits. In addition, Burt led the team that revamped the information system (PSI) and constructed over 280 management reports from the system using a wide variety of programs. In addition, Burt created a job reporting system for project managers to organize and maintain work in the plant.

With ten years of supervisory experience, Burt managed personnel, budgets and equipment purchases in a graphics environment.  As a supervisor, he managed work assignments, established quality standards, assisted customers and internal departments in job planning and layout, and managed multiple departments. Further, Burt has many years of experience in manufacturing as a skilled pressman on sheetfed, web, rotogravure, and silkscreen equipment.

Burt has a degree from Georgia State University in Operations Management that introduced him to a variety of management systems and computer programs.  He continues to add to his educational base with classes in computer programs and database design, production management, and customer sales.
